История института начинается с далёкого 1933. В то время была образована Пожарно-техническая школа по подготовке командного состава пожарной охраны МВД БССР. Позже, в 1945, Школу переименовали в Школу сержантского состава военизированной пожарной охраны МВД БССР. В 1948 – опять переименовали, уже в Учебный отряд ВПО БССР. В 1974 это уже была Школа подготовки младшего и среднего начсостава пожарной охраны, в 1984 – Учебный центр пожарной охраны МВД БССР. И наконец-то в 1992 году учебное заведение получило звание Высшего пожарно-технического училища МВД Беларуси. Далее им было присвоено звание Высшего учебного заведения.
Именно такой длинный путь прошёл институт, чтобы на сегодняшний день стать единственным ВУЗом республики по специальности пожарная безопасность. А в 2000 году приобрёл своё настоящее имя - Командно - инженерный институт МЧС Республики Беларусь.
На сегодняшний день управляет институтом Ласута Геннадий Федорович – кандидат сельскохозяйственных наук, подполковник внутренней службы.
Подготовка специалистов ведётся на следующих факультетах:
- инженерном;
- командном;
- заочного обучения.
